The undefeated Melrose Youth Soccer team (9-0-1) was recently crowned Middlesex League Commissioner Cup champions in the Boys Under 14, Division 2 bracket, June 18. Melrose topped Billerica Lowell in the semifinals, 4-3, June 17, before beating Billerica 5-3, the following day, at the Joyce Middle School in Woburn.
Melrose now turns its attention to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions this weekend at the Pronger Field Complex in Lancaster.
The 12-team tournament will cover 10 different leagues. Melrose begins round-robin play Friday, June 23 at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. before finishing with a Saturday morning game at 10 a.m. The top four teams in the round robin advance to the semifinal and final round on Sunday, June 25.
Representing Team Melrose was co-captains Jacobus Overgaag and Jack O’Hara, along with Griffin Castergine, Emmet Phelan, Aidan Sullivan, Liam O’Hara, Ben Elenbaas, Seamus Matthews, John LeComte, Hooper Ward, Ryan Hanley, Adam Drafts-Johnson, Parker Thornton, Matthew Mullen, Graham MacDonald, Max Farmelant, Dan Oteri and Christian Carrieri. Head coach Ian Maher and assistant coaches John LeComte and Charlie Phelan coached the team.
